Discover Russia

Russia makes up one-seventh of the world’s landmass and spans eight different time zones. The country has a complicated array of landscapes and is home to the largest river in Europe, the Volga; the largest lake in the world, the Caspian Sea; the world's deepest freshwater lake, the Baikal; and Europe's highest peak, Elbrus. Due to its diverse landscapes, Russia now boasts 40 national parks and a number of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.

Russia has witnessed so much in terms of politics, war and revolution creating an intense history that can be seen at every corner. From ancient walled fortresses to colourful churches and charming historical towns, Russia’s historical heritage is very prominent to this day, particularly in Moscow which has been the setting for many of Russia’s pivotal events through the years. The range of outstanding architectural masterpieces adds to the magic of this remarkable country. Russia’s fascinating culture is a pleasant surprise for many first-time visitors to the country. Like most big cities, Russia’s cities are insanely busy with plenty of restaurants, bars and shopping centres. Russia also has vibrant nightlife which is usually fuelled by Vodka, but it is the art culture that sets it aside from other countries.

In regards to the arts, the country has always held a prominent spot and boasts some of the worlds greatest art institutions including The Bolshoi Theatre and Pushkin Art Gallery in Moscow and the Mariinsky Theatre and The Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Russia’s incomparable art culture derives from many inspirational artists and writers who have created masterpieces in the county, including Leo Tolstoy; the author of acclaimed novel ‘War and Peace’. You haven’t really experience Russia until you have been to one of the many theatres to watch a beautiful and enlightening ballet performance.

In terms of food and drink, Moscow and St Petersburg are bursting at the seams with cafés and restaurants offering an assortment of cuisines. Other than traditional Russian food such as hearty soups and hot pies, Russia’s favoured cuisine tends to be Japanese, meaning there are plenty of sushi bars and Japanese inspired restaurants to choose from. It is no secret that Vodka is Russia’s national drink so expect to see the locals knocking back shots of vodka at any time of the day. Beer is also essential in the summer and it isn’t uncommon for Russians to drink beer on their way to work.
