  • Important information

  • * River boat transport

Note that the river journeys from Sandakan to Abai and from Sukau back to Sandakan are on a shared basis with passengers who are not Cox & Kings clients.

  • The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre

Sun bears are the smallest and least known members of the bear species. Their populations are rapidly diminishing in Southeast Asia, as habitats are destroyed by deforestation and bears are killed for commercial exploitation. The mission of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) in Sepilok, Sabah, is to rescue captured sun bears, and promote sun bear conservation in Borneo through animal welfare, conservation, rehabilitation, research and education programmes. There are currently 28 rescued bears at the BSBCC, which the centre aims to eventually reintroduce to the surrounding forest. A visit here is an opportunity to learn more about the animals, and the work the centre is doing to protect them.
